Companies are spending marketing budgets online more than any other place

The places companies are investing their money are changing.  Do you know where they are putting it?

Although the importance of lead generation (the purpose for spending on marketing) hasn't changed, how companies are going about their marketing definitely has.
Articles posted on eMarketer are revealing, more and more, that companies are spending ONLINE more than any other place.

As of this year, studies show that most companies worldwide are spending on website design and content, email marketing, new social media tools (such as blogging etc), and web search optimization the most.  Last on the list of where companies are spending are telemarketing and direct mail.  If this doesn't represent a shift in how marketing works, I don't know what does!

Why is this? What can explain this shift?  The best place to look is to the consumers.  And is the web not the first place you look for information? Then it's only natural for businesses to go online because that's where the consumers are!

At the same time, however, according to eMarketer article "Marketers Put More Lead Gen Budgets Online", companies are saying that the execution of marketing campaigns that are done online needs to be improved.

Here's the message we're getting from this article: Yes, going online with your marketing campaigns is a good idea.  You'll find people there and they will definitely find you.  But it needs to be done right for it to work. Don't get messy!

Online Ad Spending a Profitable and Sustainable Investment

Although most of the economy has suffered since 2009, and the total media spending dropped, online ad spending actually increased by 2%.  By 2010, eMarketer predicts a double-digit increase in internet marketing and by 2014, despite the instability of the rest of the economy, predicts global spending online ads will reach $98.6 billion.

Why are the huge numbers for internet marketing so big and how will they sustain?  eMarketers own Jared Jenks suggests that "Online is more measurable, more effective and where people are increasingly spending their time" (eMarketer.com).
